En 1983, on est déjà à 7 soirées. Lionel Hampton attend avec impatience le repas préparé en son honneur à la fin du concert. Une soirée avait spécialement été programmée pour provoquer une nouvelle rencontre entre Stan Getz et son premier employeur, Woody Herman. Hélas, Stan Getz dut annuler sa tournée et il fut remplacé par l’organiste Jimmy Smith. La venue de Fats Domino, puis une gigantesque Nuit du Blues et du Gospel (avec 6 groupes différents) donnèrent à cette édition une coloration englobant toutes les musiques afro-américaines. En 1983, démarrage des stages, qui deviendront plus tard l’Académie.
