Avishai Cohen
Anne Paceo
Avishai Cohen quintet
If we go through all the styles of the Israeli bass player since his beginnings with Chick Corea’s trio called Origin in the 90s, before he became one of the big international names of jazz in just a few years, we could almost forget the paramount importance he has had on the worldwide jazz universe. Indeed, Avishai Cohen has almost tried everything: different fusions, recordings with a symphony orchestra, film scores and even songs. It’s largely thanks to him that his country is known today as a hot bed of composers and improvisers where he has discovered and supported an immense number of instrumentalists who later stood on their own two feet and wrote their own story, like the pianists Shai Maestro, Nitai Hershkovits and Omri Mor, or the drummer Mark Guiliana.
For a few years, he’s been bringing a new generation of Israeli instrumentalists together who share his taste for the blending of genres and experiments. Also, his last album “Brightlight”, highlighting the young drummer Roni Kaspi who caused a sensation at the Club last year, demonstrates that the leader and relentless talent spotter’s intuition remains intact.
